Frank and Carmen Reitsma, along with their son Justin, decided to try a new venture in the farm industry. They diversified their corn, soybean and beef operation by also raising elk. Deo Gloria Elk was established in 1999 on the Reitsma farm two miles northwest of New Sharon, Iowa. The Reitsma's have a herd of 80 animals on 40 acres of pasture. The elk are fed hay, corn, oats and a nutritional supplement to balance their diet.
In more recent years the Reitsma's have been selling elk meat at the Downtown Farmers' Market in Des Moines, which runs from May through October. The Reitsma's are also part of the Heartland Elk group, which sells meat at the Metro Market (indoor Farmers' Market) in Des Moines.
